Rats versus Mice: Can You Tell the Difference?

Power Pest
Jun 2, 2017 Rodents Comments Off on Rats versus Mice: Can You Tell the Difference?

mice control Toronto

They both have whiskers.

They both creep along the insides of your home at night.

Food is a delight to them, especially when small crumbs are left for them to nibble on.

Are we talking about mice or rats?

If you were to see a small critter run across the floor, would you be able to tell the difference?

Most cannot, and that is okay. However, when you are looking for mice control in Toronto, it is imperative you know the difference. Some methods work on both mice and rats – and in that case, you don’t have to concern yourself with the difference.

However, the habits of the two are incredibly different, so to prevent mice or rats from returning, you need to know how they differ from one another.

Color and General Appearance

At first glance, you might think mice and rats look alike. The reason for that assumption is that mice and rats both range in colors from white to brown to gray.

Mice have large, floppy ears and a long, thin, hairy tail. Rats have long tails, but they are thicker and harmless. Also, a rat does not have the large floppy ears, and their nose is blunt.

Mouse and Rat Size

Here’s a good indicator for what you are dealing with. A mouse is smaller than a rat – averaging 12 to 20 centimeters in length. A rat, on the other hand, is larger and can be 40 centimeters or more in length.

Proof is in the Droppings

While you might not find it desirable, looking at the droppings tells you what you are working with. Mice produce anywhere from 40 to 100 droppings per day, while rats only expel 20 to 50.

Behavior

Mice are curious little creatures. They like to explore, see what is going on around them, and therefore they are much easier to trap.

Rats are not curious and are shyer. They will hide away at the first sign of light or sound, and they are not easily drawn to traps like mice.

The Norway Rat of Canada Versus the Roof Rat

Don’t let the name deceive you – this rat is here. The Norway rat is easily identified, because it can weigh up to one pound and is beastly compared to the average house mouse. Furthermore, they build elaborate tunnels underground and around the perimeter of your home.

The roof fat is a climber who typically resides in trees and vegetation. However, if they are to enter your home, they most likely will do so in the attic and upper stories of the house.
