Revenge of the Wasps: How to Find Hidden Wasp Nests

Wasp Nests

A wasp nest likely isn’t something you’d want to encounter while cleaning your gutters or enjoying a summer backyard barbecue, and wasp removal in Toronto isn’t something you’ll want to tackle yourself. If you know where these pests tend to make their homes, you’ll be able to stay one step ahead of any potential problems.

On the Ground

Ground wasp nests are incredibly difficult to locate because leaves and other detritus often cover their entrances. However, these types of nests are not without danger — stepping on a ground nest can inspire several dozen wasps to sting at once. If you regularly see wasps coming and going from a particular spot of your lawn, keep an eye out. A nest is likely lurking underneath.

Other common outdoor locations for wasp nests include under roofing tiles, outdoor structures (such as playhouses or sheds), and in compost heaps. Wasps will build their nests anywhere that contains enough food, water, and protection from the elements. As long as an area is relatively undisturbed, it is fair game for new wasp tenants. Be cautious around any areas you suspect may be harboring wasp nests.

Windows and Attics

Finding wasps indoors this time of year is a common — albeit unwelcome — situation. As the weather warms, wasps will begin to explore, so finding a few wasps here or there in your house doesn’t necessarily mean that your house has been invaded. However, an unusually large population of indoor wasps likely indicates that there is a nest somewhere inside.

Two common locations are windows and attics. Wasps that have been trapped inside often congregate around windows as they seek a source of light. They can also make their way into a house through cracks or anywhere gaps exist. The warm, well-lit and lofty nature make attics a popular choice for new wasp real estate as well.

Trees

Several species of wasps like to build their nests in trees, bushes, or shrubs. Usually, these types of nests will resemble gray footballs. Be careful around any trees with a large amount of greenery; as trees begin to leaf out in midsummer, it can be difficult to spot a high-riding wasp nest.

Found a Nest? Find Reliable Pest Control in Toronto

Don’t try to tackle a pesky nest on your own. This will increase your likelihood of agitating the wasps, and of getting stung. In some cases, wasp nests may be uninhabited, as wasps do not reuse the same nest from year to year.

This can be difficult to determine, so instead contact Power Pest Control for any wasp nest removal needs.  We can easily identify common hiding places for wasp nests, and have the best equipment and necessary expertise for the most reliable pest control in the Toronto area. We have an A+ rating with the BBB and superior customer reviews. Give us a call at 647-708-7378 to book us today.
