    Cockroach Control Toronto

The presence of just one cockroach can feel like your home is being invaded, or perhaps like your home is unsanitary. In large cities like Toronto, it’s almost inevitable that cockroaches may find a way into your home, apartment, or condo.

For those living in apartments, older buildings may be particularly susceptible as there are more opportunities for cockroaches to find a way into your place, especially if you live near the ground floor or next to an infected unit.

An experienced residential cockroach exterminator can help you get rid of these pests and prevent them from coming back.

In many homes, all it takes is a tiny opening and a regular source of food (you would be amazed at what they consider food) to keep them coming back for more. Older and larger houses can pose difficult challenges for cockroach control exterminators as there are so many opportunities for these pests to get in.

By working with an experienced cockroach exterminator like Power Pest Control, you and your family will be able to rest easy knowing you have taken the necessary precautions to eliminate cockroaches from your home.

Signs of Cockroaches in Your Home

Signs of cockroaches in Toronto can be similar to signs of rats and other pests. Small holes present in food packaging can be a sign of cockroaches, as they will eat through the paper or plastic to get to the contents inside.

Cockroaches will also shed their skin approximately six or seven times as they become adults. The skins can be found near the walls where they will crawl inside during the day.

Cockroaches also leave very small droppings. These droppings are harder to detect than many other pest droppings, but they are present so look for small black cylindrical droppings near walls where they are prone to hiding during the day.

Problems with Having a Cockroach Infestation

The presence of cockroaches can cause all kinds of issues from contamination of foods with their fecal droppings to development of severe cockroach-related allergies like asthma in extreme infestation cases.

Toronto Cockroaches also can end up in inconvenient places in the home such as in walls with electrical wiring, electrical junction boxes, and inside computers. This adds an element of danger to cockroaches, as they can cause electrical damage that has the potential to cause a fire, or at the very least will be expensive to replace.

Besides the physical threats that the presence of cockroaches brings, there is a comfort issue for many people knowing that they have cockroaches in their home or business.

How to Remove Cockroaches from Your Home

    Common DIY Methods

There are many DIY methods to get rid of the cockroaches. One of the most popular DIY methods for cockroach removal is adhesive tape. These tapes are strategically placed and can potentially pick up pests, though there is no guarantee that cockroaches will go to that area of the home. Without knowing where the cockroaches are sheltering in the walls, it’s all a guessing game for amateur cockroach hunters. There are also some sprays that can be spread throughout the home, however the sprays are not very healthy for homeowners, children, or pets and should not be used lightly or by amateurs.

    Why Call a Professional Exterminator?

Calling for cockroach control takes the guesswork out of getting rid of pests. Not only can a cockroach exterminator quickly find where the cockroaches are hiding, but they can remove the pests without creating hazards in the home for homeowners, children, and pets. Inspection

During an inspection, an exterminator will look inside and outside the building with the pest problem. They will find common areas where cockroaches tend to enter the home and other areas where the cockroaches might be living. There are many tools that an inspector might use including a flashlight, a moisture meter, and other tools to determine where the pests are located.

    What Homeowners Can Do

It is important to be thorough to ensure that once cockroaches are gone, they stay gone. One of the simplest ways to ensure that cockroaches do not return is by properly storing food. Store food in airtight containers and keep things like bags of bread and cereal securely stored away in a cabinet.

Also, be sure to clean up any spills that accumulate during the day right away. Sticky juice stains on the floor or counter is another type of food residue that can be very attractive to cockroaches. Keep garbage cans clean and don’t let garbage overflow as that can give roaches reason to accumulate. Try to keep the entire home very dry and don’t let water residue buildup in the sink or bathtub as the roaches will see this as a water source and it will keep them happy to live in the home or building.

    About Cockroaches

    Types of Cockroaches

There are three types of cockroaches that homeowners in the Greater Toronto Area need to look out for German cockroaches, brown banded cockroaches, and the oriental cockroach.

German cockroaches are the world most prolific breeder in terms of roach populations. They are a yellow-brown colour and have two distinct parallel bands that run across the pronotum on the adults and across the entire body of the nymphs. German cockroaches are typically 1cm to 1.5 cm in length. They can be found anywhere in the home but are typically attracted to shipping containers and boxes of foods and other goods. They prefer to refer to live near warm moist areas where they can develop rapidly and spread to multiple facilities within commercial or residential settings. They are generally nocturnal; however they may be present in the day if there are very large populations. Their Incubation period from nymph to adult can occur from 6 to 8 weeks and live for 4 to 5 months.

Brown banded cockroaches like the name suggests, are mainly brown to yellowish. Like the German cockroach, they are relatively small growing to 1cm to 1.5cm. They are nocturnal; however, they can be seen in the day if the population is large. They are known to coexist with other roach populations; however, the German roaches will out populate them due to their prolific breeding cycle. Female roaches contain 16 to 18 eggs within one capsule and the incubation period is about 6 to 10 weeks which is longer than German roach. Nymphs will take about 5 months to reach adulthood and live for approximately 10 months. Brown banded roaches will mainly feed on paper products.

Oriental roaches look a bit different than German roaches and brown banded roaches. They are slightly bigger growing up to 2.5 cm in length and they are dark brown to black. Females lay 16 eggs in an egg capsule and will hatch within 60 days and live have an average lifespan of up to two years. This roach is slow in movement and absolutely prefers to stay in dark areas within a basement where it is nice and damp; however, they can found in crevices such as baseboards, utility and service tunnels, and sewer pipes. From time to time they can reach the upper floors through plumbing pipes within the walls of the building. Oriental roaches are also sometimes tricky because of their ability to hide in cracks and crevices due to their large size.

    What Cockroaches Eat

Cockroaches eat a variety of things that can be found throughout homes and businesses. As previously mentioned, different types of cockroaches will eat different types of things. Brown banded roaches are known to eat paper products so they are willing to eat things like books, decaying plants, and even dead wood.

Other cockroaches, like oriental roaches and German cockroaches, are more attracted to food and will scavenge for things left out such as crumbs, spills, and other food residue. Cockroaches prefer things like starches and meats, though they will eat pretty much any type of organic matter.

The best way to keep cockroaches out is by cutting off their food supply by keeping food locked up and sealed tight, cleaning up spills and crumbs, and making sure that garbage is being sealed and changed often.

    Lifecycle

Like most insects, the lifecycle of a cockroach is not that long, however, once a few cockroaches enter the home they will continue to lay eggs and reproduce until something is done about them. Cockroaches typically only lay a few dozen eggs and the incubation period is only around two months for each type of cockroach. The lifecycle of most cockroaches is only a few months. It is unlikely that any type of Canadian cockroach will live to see their first birthday.

Inside a home, the temperature is regulated so seasons do not play very much of a part in the lifecycle of cockroaches, as they live within the warm insulated walls. Even the short lifecycle of cockroaches quickly doubles and triples with each new generation. It is important to get cockroaches out and keep them out before they have a chance to heavily populate the building or your property.

Why They Like Living in Homes

One of the main reasons that cockroaches like to live in homes is the ease of access they have to food. Humans leaving food out and available for ease of consumption is more convenient to them than eating other organic matter found out of doors. Homes also keep cockroaches safe from the elements outside and provide warm spaces for them to live.

Just like a home or an office is meant to be comfortable to the people coming in and out, they can become comfortable for cockroaches too. Cockroaches can’t live in a home, no matter how nice it is, if they do not have a food supply and so giving a house clean and free of spills will keep roaches from returning.

    FAQs About Cockroaches

    Q. I keep my home very clean, why are cockroaches still getting in?

    A. Keeping a home clean is one way to prevent cockroaches from getting in, however, all it takes is one mess left for a little too long to attract cockroaches. Once they’re in the home they are hard to get out, even with constant cleaning. A small neglected stain can be enough to begin the process of attracting cockroaches, and even after the stain is cleaned they can find other organic matter in the home such as paper to snack on. There are other factors in a home that can also attract cockroaches such as moisture and work that the homeowner has less of effect on. However, these factors usually come in to play after the cockroaches have already come into the home.

    Q. I heard that cockroaches are very clean, why are they attracted to messes?

    A. It’s true that cockroaches are very vigilant when it comes to cleaning themselves, however, this does not mean that they are not attracted to human messes, as messes provide them food. If a cockroach comes into contact with something that they deem dirty, such as a human, they will rush off to clean themselves, however, they regarding human messages such as discarded food, garbage and spills as a buffet and therefore are not bothered by it.

    Q. Can cockroaches bite?

    A. Cockroaches are more afraid of you than you are of them. They are typically not aggressive with people and will avoid humans as much as they can. They are omnivores and are known to eat just about anything including meat, but humans are not typically on the menu. The types of cockroaches that are present in Canada are also too small to bite humans. Only larger cockroaches are able to bite, and those cockroaches do not live in Canada.

    Q. Can cats really help get rid of cockroaches?

    A. A cat is a great way to try and manage pests, however, they cannot keep up with the reproduction of cockroaches. One cat may kill a few roaches, however, they can’t reach the ones that are nesting inside the wall, nor can they stop the reproductive cycle of the cockroaches to keep them coming back. The only way to ensure this is by calling a professional exterminator like those at Power Pest Control.
